He stands only 1.67m in his socks, but Western Province scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies staan terug vir niemand.
There were some concerns at the start of the Currie Cup over the lack of depth at WP in this position, but Jantjies has proven that he has what it takes to make a difference in the blue and white hoops of Province.
Playing off the bench for the experienced Jano Vermaak, the 22-year-old is still fine-tuning his game.
But when WP travel to Ellis Park where they face the Golden Lions on Saturday, Jantjies will again be looking to provide the backline spark off the bench.
He has impressed the coaching staff at WP, with assistant coach Dawie Snyman being especially pleased with the speed of his game.
Of Jantjies, Snyman says: “I rate him as a player.
“He’s been doing well in the SuperSport Challenge.
“He brings speed to the game, he’s got good support lines and he is quick to the ball. Every time he’s been on the field, he’s been able to speed up the game.
“He’s got a great pass - his kicking game under pressure is something that he hasn’t been exposed to at this level.
“But it’s something we’ve been working on.”
The speed of play Jantjies brings off the bench will be a big weapon for WP against the log-leading Lions this weekend.
Of their hosts, Snyman adds: “The Lions are dangerous at Ellis Park.
“Last year we came close to a win, but in the end it was one or two mistakes that cost us the game.
“We know what’s waiting for us at Ellis Park and we are ready for that.
“They’re a good team in terms of keeping the ball in hand, but I also back us when we have ball in hand.
“The focus is on what we can do and where we are as a team.”
