Saturday night’s trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor was a whirlwind right up until a freak injury stopped things.
McGregor missed on a punch in the closing seconds of the opening round of their UFC 264 lightweight main event in Las Vegas, then appeared to break his left ankle as it rolled while he backpedaled.
The ringside doctor waved off the fight, so it goes into the books as a TKO in favour of Poirier, who took the last two fights out of their three.
McGregor had to leave the arena on a stretcher.
UFC boss Dana White, meanwhile, has said that McGregor and Poirier will meet for a fourth time.
White says: “It sucks, it’s brutal, it’s not the way you want to see fights end. Dustin Poirier will fight for the title and when Conor is healed and ready to go, you do the rematch, I guess.”
