What a memorable season it was in the NFD for Cape football as the region produced a champion as well as the league’s top goalscorer.
There unfortunately won’t be a Player of the Season, but that award might have gone to a man from the Cape as well from what we’ve seen.
There were a few hiccups, but Stellenbosch always looked like they would be the side that would be on the championship podium lifting the trophy.
It was hard to imagine that they would spend 19 weeks at the top of the table and not win the title.
Striker Iqraam Rayners was the main ou, banging in 19 goals, which will see him handed the top goalscorer’s award at the PSL awards in Durban.

Ubuntu Cape Town were unfortunately relegated, but striker Waseem Isaacs can be proud of how his 13 goals gave his side a chance of survival up until the last match.
Ubuntu were at the bottom of the table when the league went on a break, but managed to move up and really gave the relegation battle a good fight.
It’s now up to back-to-back Safa Western Cape ABC Motsepe League champions Steenberg United to fill the void left by Ubuntu.
Steenberg will contest the NFD Playoffs for the second year running.
They would have learnt a thing or two from their experience at the same level last year and we might see them go up this time.
