So 29 years of waiting for a league title looks to have become 30 for Liverpool.
After Manchester City brushed aside Manchester United in the derby on Wednesday night, it’s hard to see Pep Guardiola’s defending Premier League champions slip up in their remaining three games.
I feel for Liverpool fans. Their mighty and wondrous club were the envy of the world in 1970s and 1980s, but they have been made to look on as rivals were crowned kings of England year after year since 1990.
The club that held the throne for 13 times in that period were Manchester United. United even eclipsed the Merseysiders’ record 18 titles with 20.
United though are starting to feel the Reds’ pain, having last lifted the trophy in 2013 - history is threatening to overtake them too.
United have been so bad recently - losing seven of their previous nine matches - that most Liverpool fans weren’t holding their breath for a helping hand from the Red Devils.
A draw would have been enough to help the Anfield side’s cause. But alas, they got nothing from a side that has conceded at least two goals in their last three games coming into the midweek clash.
To be honest as a neutral in the title race, I don’t mind who wins it.
Last week, I wanted City to win it all and cursed Spurs for ending their Champions League quest.
With just a domestic treble to play for, their story is weakened.
And for that reason, Liverpool winning the league after a generation would sit better with me. So, now we just have to hope Burnley, Leicester or Brighton can stop City from winning title.
