Western Province coach John Dobson has proven in the past that he is a man that takes a good look at club rugby.
He was the guy responsible for giving Chris Cloete his first run for the Streeptruie in the Currie Cup back in 2015.
Back then, Cloete was a no-name and now he is heading to Ireland where he will play for Munster.
We’ve spoken about the players that fall through the cracks and get scooped up by other provinces at length before – think Garth April.
But in Dobson, I believe, Province have a coach that is not scared to give the amateur guys a run.
Hamiltons star Harlon Klaasen has been given a decent run by Western Province in the SuperSport Challenge, then there was also a player like Errol Jaggers.
After moving from Sir Lowrians to Tygerberg at the end of last season Jaggers’ star has been shining again.
And while he might not get a look-in this season, strong performances in Super League A might see him don the No.10 jumper for WP in next
season’s SuperSport Challenge.
For years I’ve been of the opinion that the club game is being ignored at the top level, but I get a feeling that Dobson is watching and that should serve as motivation to all the club players out there.
There is still a little bit of hope. Dis min, maar dis in.
Anyway, the guys at Pniel Villagers are past the point of hope.
They now need a miracle to stay in the top flight.
The league’s bottom-dwellers, still in search of their first Super League A win this year, will host Victorians on Saturday.
With only a handful of games left to play this season, they are in real danger of finishing the season without a win.
Pniel will be hoping that Vics come to them a bit tired after having played UWC last night.
The match in Bellville wasn’t the only midweek encounter as Maties also hosted SK Walmers at the Danie Craven Stadium.
A win for Maties in that encounter and another win over Belhar – also at home on Saturday – will see them seriously push up the table and put some pressure on leaders and defending champions False Bay.
The Bay, though, will not give up hope of successfully defending their crown when they host Durbell at the Phillip Herbstein Stadium in what is a jam-packed weekend in SLA.
While Pniel look set for the drop, Primrose will eye their match against UWC on Saturday as a must win if they want to avoid playing in Super League B next term.
They will also keep a close eye on the result at the Track where Walmers host third-from-bottom Parow NTK.
With Walmers also having played last night, NTK will smell blood and a win for Wilbur Kraak’s men in this encounter will go a long way in
helping them secure safety.
