Welcome back to all the varsity teams in this year’s Super League A competition.
After what felt like an eternity, UWC returned to the field of play last night when they hosted St Georges in Bellville.
And while the league action was a bit leaner over the past few weeks with the likes of UWC, Maties, Vics and Ikeys not playing, it wasn’t short on on-field action.
This past weekend saw a total of 57 tries scored in only five matches in Western Province’s top division. That’s an average of over 11 tries per match.
Tygerberg scored 11 of their own as they recorded the biggest score of the weekend – 69 – to the 12 scored by their hosts Belhar.
The Tiere’s back three het nou behoorlik baljaar in this outing, with wing Lucian Kirchner scoring a hattrick of tries, his second of the season, with fullback Dale van Schalkwyk also dotting down twice.
The wing lifted Tygerberg into the top six after a slow start to the season.
But they weren’t the only team to run wild on the weekend.
It was in Milnerton where the most tries were scored in a match – 14.
Hosts UniMil ran in eight tries to Parow NTK's six for a winning scoreline of 50-41 to keep their continue their impressive start to the season.
Onto this weekend, UWC have a busy schedule, having last played in May.
Coach Chester Williams’ team face Tygerberg for their second game of the week in what should be yet another entertaining derby at Florida Park on Saturday.
Maties and Ikeys also return to action on Saturday.
In one of the biggest matches this weekend, Ikeys host False Bay in what will be a true test of their title credentials.
Maties, meanwhile, travel to SK Walmers, who shocked Hamiltons a few weeks ago.
But the defending champions shouldn’t have too much difficulty getting past this one.
Log leaders Durbell also have a university test to ace when they travel to Victorians.
After their convincing win over neighbours Brackenfell last weekend, fullback Angus Cleophas and his Durbell team will know that their hosts will not go down easily.
As for Belhar, who have not yet won a match in seven outings this year, they will be in for yet another tough afternoon at home to Hamiltons.
