SA’s top Drift warriors are geared up to tear a path of smoke, screeching tyres and screaming engines right through the heart of our urban jungle.
Monday, 24 September, sees the third edition of premier Driftkhana festival Drift City hit the iconic Grand Parade, with a unique blend of drift and gymkhana that will test the talent and mettle of our local and national sideways heroes.
And quite a festival it is. Though drifting takes centre stage, there’s loads of other entertainment for the whole family, from hot cars to spectator rides and a kids entertainment area, Drift City will make this Heritage Day one to remember. The event will make history in an already historic space between the Castle and City Hall.
True to type, the organisers are keeping the hosting levels up this year, having noted what the crowds had to say in 2016 and 2017. So expect grandstand seating to put you right where the action is, as well as a kwaai VIP area for those who get a kick out of the extras, which include bars, lounges and pit access, as well as a first-come-first-served grandstand seat.
The organisers say they have designed a challenging new course, with the focus on high-speed entries, smoke-filled sweepers and mind-bending donut sections. The stage is set out to provide on-your-feet entertainment and thrills.
Media man Jason Williams says: “It’s starting to become a tough act to follow, but we are constantly striving to evolve and improve
“This year we have invited drivers from across the country to bring their A-game and compete for cash prizes and the top three spots on the podium.”
Bobby Nitro spoke to organiser Gary Stockenstroom ahead of the event, asking this seasoned petrolhead about his vision for the event.
Gary says: “All we ever wanted was to host an event in Cape Town, for Cape Town and by Cape Town. That’s all. We wanted to do something that feels international, but shows off local talent.
“The show is about who we are as gearheads and about how we can all enjoy something positive and exciting across all social differences, with the blessing of the City of Cape Town. It’s less about “who is doing it” for us, it’s rather about doing it for all of us.
“We have created a safe and controlled environment that supports positive and affordable fun and excitement for the whole family to come out and enjoy. Hope to see you there.”
Other attractions include a skate park, custom karre and bikes on display, sound demonstrations, spectator Drift rides, exhibitor market and live acts. You can also tuck into some grub from one of the food trucks, while the children revel in the safe and contained kids entertainment area.
Drift City opens on the Grand Parade at 11am. Tickets are available from Computicket. General access is R90, grandstand seating is R160 and VIP R250.
