Local celebs are rallying behind a campaign to help feed thousands of hungry children who relied on their school feeding schemes, but have now been left to fend for themselves following the national lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Thanks to the Cans With Purpose project started by Brad Stern, the CEO and founder of Superiate, thousands of kids are able to get a warm meal to sustain them through lockdown and thereafter.
“I woke up one day in March and decided to start off this initiative, not knowing it would spike so fast, we’ve currently raised R350 000,” says Brad.
“Lockdown has had a catastrophic effect on the country’s poor.
“So many people who are unemployed or unable to work during this extremely difficult time can’t feed themselves or their families.
“If you have anything to spare, be it canned food or money, it’s up to you to be part of the solution. It will save lives and stop entire families from going hungry.
“We now call on South Africa to help Cans With Purpose reach R1 million by the end of lockdown and with that money, we will make sure another 100 000 needy people don’t go hungry. Together, we can make it happen.”
Celebrities aiding the cause by promoting the project on social media include Lee-Anne Liebenberg, Siv Ngesi, Gareth Cliff, Francois Pienaar, McGee as well as Kyle Cassim, Claudia Henkel, Chris Beats, Precious Nala, Cindy Nel, Thulani Hadebe, Pascal, Nik Rabinowitz, Shaun Duvet and Taryn Louch.
Brad says: “Some celebs have given donations, but generally it’s about giving of their time and lending their voices to spread the message to their social media following encouraging all their followers to donate and join this initiative.”
Brad says Superiate gives cash to the Afrika Tikkun NGO in Mfuleni, whose members prepare the packages at the centres.

They then invite community members to collect it on behalf of their households.
Since lockdown began, 7500 hampers have been handed out, to feed about 50 000 people.
