Being seen on the road, especially when you are out walking, is probably one of the most basic and vital element of staying safe on the roads.
Think on this for a moment. As a driver, there’s so much to focus on: road signs, other drivers, the road, what’s happening on the pavement, and more. With all this going on, it can happen that you miss that dark object lurking near the road.
So, as a pedestrian, let’s make it easier for drivers to see us, and in a case where there’s danger involved, to react in good time. Being seen just increases those chances of survival.
First fix is to wear bright clothing. Find something reflective for the kids to wear. Be especially cautious around times of low visibility, like sundown.
Then, as the adult, you lead by example. If you show that you are respectful of the road and careful, then your kids will do the same. And what we learn as youngsters sticks, becoming the way we behave.
Truly, the change begins with you.
