What happens when four Cape Flats social media celebrities come together?
They make magic and gatmaak videos, that’s what.
There’s a new “boy band” innie Kaap and they’re ready to tickle your funny bone.
Waseef Piekaan, Alen the Car Guard, Shakir Chuqy and Jamie Barthus have teamed up to form That Funny Boy Band.
And although they’ve only been together for a month they are already causing waves.
The four first caught the attention with their remix of the hit song, Señorita, Cape Flats style.
And last Friday, they hit the internet with another funny jol number.
NOSTALGIA: Ninja Turtles version of ’90s hit
Their second video is a remake of the Black Box ’90s club anthem, Everybody, Everybody, but Waseef says their version is called J ou Ma en Pa Is Ninja Turtles.
In the video, shot in Sea Point and Athlone, the comics belt out funny lyrics and include the public in their gatmaak video.
A verse in the song goes: “Groot ore soes taxi deure, jou ma teken jou labarang klere, avocado pere maakie hare meere, ons gate vir jou en ons voel vere, jou hakke is soe hard jou voete skiet vonkies, jy’s soe klein hulle skree jou klonkies.”
The chorus goes: “Jou ma en pa is ninja turtles, ow, en nou is jy die baby turtle, ow.”
The song is written by Waseef, while Jamie brought the beats and the video was shot by Shakir.
That Funny Boy Band is all about nostalgia, says Waseef: “The intention is to take people back to the ’90s while at the same time making them laugh and giving a fresh remix that makes them ready for a festive jol.”
Waseef says the group and their music have been well received by the public.
Jamie, who hit fame with his remix of the video Hugo bel die polisi e, adds: “I’m thankful to put a song out there that puts a smile on many faces. All the positive comments that were posted were really amazing.
SING SAAM: Public also featured in the video
“It just shows what an impact we have out there and that we don’t only do it for likes or to be noticed, we do it out of passion because music is something we all love and the response of the audience shows it.”
Waseef says they hope their music will be played on local radio stations: “We deserve this and hope that our music will be recognised and aired.”
Their video was posted on YouTube four days ago and has so far received nearly 5000 hits.
