After the braai of Heritage Month never mind Heritage Day, our bodies need a bit of light relief.
Summer is around the corner so I know many of us will be looking at quickie diets and joining running clubs.
If you are a dedicated meat-eater but don’t smaak chops and wors, there’s always lighter meats like fish and chicken to turn to.
Fish is delicious and nutritious and there’s a million ways to eat it.
It’s also relatively cheap and very easy and quick to prepare.
In fact, if you’re looking for a healthier lifestyle, cut down on your red meat and eat more fish.
Intermediate Technology Publications states: “Fish provides a good source of high quality protein and contains many vitamins and minerals.
“It may be classed as either whitefish, oily fish or shellfish.
“Whitefish, such as haddock and seer, contain very little fat (usually less than 1%), whereas oily fish, such as sardines, contain between 10-25%.
“The latter, as a result of its high fat content, contains a range of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and essential fatty acids, all of which are vital for the healthy functioning of the body.”
According to www.healthline.com, fish can, among other things, treat or even prevent depression, decreases your risk of autoimmune disease, may help your sight in old age, help to prevent asthma in children, and could also improve sleep quality.
