A math boffin from Mitchells Plain has received an opportunity of a lifetime to attend a foreign exchange student programme in the Netherlands next year, but he needs to raise R9000 before 11 December.
Joshua Claassen, 16, a Grade 10 pupil at Beacon Hill Secondary in Beacon Valley was invited to attend the Global Exchange Programme from 3-14 June which costs R22 500.
His mother, Amanda Claassen, says her husband is the sole breadwinner and they are struggling to raise the necessary funds.
“I am not working at the moment and for the past six months his father has been on short time,” she says.
“I am desperately seeking help for him as we need to pay R9 000 by 11 December which I don’t have. Joshua is a top achiever at his school, with first place in maths.
“He works hard to bring home great results. He is a quiet child who just wants to succeed.”
If he goes, Joshua will visit two schools and two universities during his stay.
GENIUS: Joshua, 16
He will be placed with a Dutch family, and stay in a hotel for one night.
He will also be visiting Germany and Belgium as part of the programme.
“This could open doors for his future. I am really pleading to anyone who can help.
“We’re also trying to get him a cellphone to stay in contact, decent clothing, toiletries, luggage, bags... anything.
“Any donation, no matter how small would be appreciated,” Amanda adds.
