Soccer is alive and kicking in the Cape again.
That’s the sense Munier got when he went to Cape Town Stadium last weekend to see the iKapa derby between Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City.
It was a perfect day for soccer - a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon - and Munier sommer decided to take his motjie, laaitie and some friends along.
At R60 a ticket and R30 for kids, it’s a nice family outing.
The fans came out in their numbers to see the highly-anticipated PSL clash.
It’s been a long time since Munier saw the stands that full at a local soccer match.
Come to think of it, not even Western Province has pulled a crowd that impressive at Newlands this season.
And the vibe was lekker. The bands, klopse, team colours and vuvuzelas created a carnival atmosphere.
The action on the pitch wasn’t bad either, it was a tense match-up with Benni McCarthy’s City coming out tops 2-0.
Good times.
Unfortunately, Munier then made the mistake of going home and turning on the TV to watch the Springboks play the Wallabies.
Eish... but that’s a story for another day.
Still buzzing from the soccer match, Munier went onto social media to gloat about his kwaai afternoon.
But before he could post his pics and videos, he found that people were already sharing... completely different match videos.
Clips of coach Benni saying “jou MSP” to an Ajax player - on national TV.
And the mense were going tekere, some found it hilarious while others were disgusted, vloeking right back at Benni.
It’s become a massive talking point.
Here’s Munier’s two cents on the issue:
Under no circumstances is it acceptable to insult another person’s mother’s private parts.
Not in public, not on TV, not even at home. It’s wrong. Period.
In most professional sports, there’s a zero tolerance approach to this kind of behaviour.
In rugby, you’ll be sent straight to the sin bin.
STUMP: Proteas star Kagiso Rabada banned for vloeking
In cricket, you can get banned from playing matches for swearing, like Kagiso Rabada on the Proteas’ tour to England earlier this year.
But in football, hooligan language is still acceptable.
In England, you can clearly see players and coaches mouthing “f***ing hell”.
In Spain, every other player shouts “* **a madre”, which is their equivalent of MSP.
And the referees and league bosses don’t do a thing about it.
DISGUSTING: John Terry's racial slur at Anton Ferdinand
Well, there was that time when John Terry called Anton Ferdinand a “f***ing black c***”, but that was more a racism issue.
Yes, it’s disgusting behaviour.
Yes, it’s unprofessional.
Yes, role models should set a better example to the youth.
Agreed. But then protest against the entire football fraternity, and not just Benni McCarthy.
Don’t get personal by targeting his Hanover Park roots or his colouredness.
Because if you want to make it personal, then the positives far outweigh the negatives.
The man is South Africa’s most illustrious footballer.
He is Bafana Bafana’s all-time top-scorer, a UEFA Champions League winner and, now, a successful coach.
There’s no doubt he’s brilliant, charismatic and passionate about the game.
And if match attendance is anything to go by, he’s also breathing new life into a decaying local soccer scene.
Finally, he was also big enough to apologise for his conduct. Let’s hope he keeps it clean from now on.
