Keagan Dolly has finally made his move overseas.
But it didn’t come easy. And after all the pushing and pulling, he won the tug of war with Mamelodi Sundowns.
It was obviously going to be a problem for the two parties to go back to the way things used to be after the highly-publicised PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) hearing surrounding his contract and buyout clause.
That came after Greek side Olympiacos were really keen on buying the player.
The DC ruled in Downs’ favour and what happened next is completely understandable.
Olympiacos wouldn’t still pursue a player with so many roadblocks in the way.
And Dolly probably felt he couldn’t go back to playing for Kabo Yellow after what happened.
French side Montpellier activated his buyout clause – the new one – and the midfielder jetted off to France for a medical.
It was reported that Sundowns claim they didn’t know Dolly’s whereabouts and only heard about his overseas trip from his friends.
In the age of Instagram and social media, everyone usually knows everyone’s business.
And if I remember correctly, there was something about France or jetting off on the player’s Snapchat.
It just seems strange that he would go, during the pre-season, and not tell anyone or him not showing up for training would go unnoticed.
This whole thing has had more twists than an episode of 7de Laan and I for one am glad it is over.
The funny thing is if you read some of the quotes from Sundowns staff, it’s almost like Dolly is as bad as Dimitri Payet.
French midfielder Payet forced a move from West Ham to Marseille this week but Dolly will have to wait until next season to play him, the sides having met just last Friday.
Now that the dust has settled and Dolly has said his thanks to SA football fans, I think he will do well there.
It’s a difficult time to move, in the middle of the European winter, but since he was Joburg-born, then moved to Cape Town and excelled, I think he knows a bit of what to expect being away from home.
We wish him all the best and hope he continues to make us proud.
