Police arrested a 21-year-old man just minutes after he allegedly shot a man in Kraaifontein on Wednesday.
The body of Riedewaan Harker, 20, was found on the corner of Vera and Martin Street in Scottsdene with two fatal gunshot wounds to his upper body.
According to residents, the shooter was known to the victim.
“These boys grew up here in this area. They played together as children,” said a resident who did want to be named.
“Riedewaan had turned his life around recently after a hectic youth. We believe this entire thing is about gang territory, he was walking in the wrong area.
“The shooter had walked up to Riedewaan almost in front of his house in Vera Street and shot him twice, throwing the gun over a fence into someone’s yard."
He said police had arrived within minutes, and arrested the shooter, and also collecting the gun where he had thrown it.
The residents said they were pleased with the police’s quick action.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says: “A case of murder has been opened for investigation following a shooting incident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon at about 2pm in Vera Street, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein.
“According to information received, the victim, a 20-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded.
“A 21-year-old suspect was arrested and a firearm with ammunition was seized. Once charged, the suspect will appear in court for murder and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition."
