The mother of the teenager who was allegedly sexually assaulted by her stepfather who is a madressa teacher took the witness stand yesterday, two years after he was arrested.
The suspect, Abdul Karriem Davids, appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court.
“I testified and I am content with the progress of the case, no matter what the outcome will be,” says the mom.
Last month the 15-year-old was the first person to testify as the trial began.
She refused to testify in camera and instead opted to be in the court where she would face her alleged abuser.
Davids was arrested at the Halawat Ul Qur’an Haafith Academy in Ottery in November 2019 after the girl told her friend what he had done to her that year during Ramadaan.
He faces three charges of grooming, sexual assault and exposing a minor to pornography.
The mom said initially she heard the man grabbed her bum and tried to kiss her daughter with an open mouth after she kissed him in greeting on the cheek.
The 37-year-old mom says she got a skrik when the teen’s grandfather informed her that there was more: “She opened up to her grandparents and my father asked me if my daughter had told me what Abdul had actually done to her.
“I told him yes, she told me he grabbed his bum but he said that was not all and he revealed more of what he had done.”
The case was postponed to June 10 as the trial continues.
