A madressa teacher accused of sexual assault has been re-arrested for the same crime, and has been released on bail.
Abdul Karriem Davids, 44, from Surrey Estate was already out on bail for an existing charge when he was busted by Grassy Park police on Monday.
Davids was first arrested in 2019, but the latest case was made by an alleged victim for a crime dating back to 2007.
Colonel Dawood Laing from Grassy Park SAPS confirms Davids’ arrest and says the victim reported the incident on 6 November.
“Grassy Park police has re-arrested Muhammad Abdul Karriem Davids on the 16th of November 2020 after a complainant opened a case of alleged sexual assault [that took place] on the first of May 2007.
“The victim only came to the police station on 6 November this year based on the fact that she felt that she should speak out against all sexual abuse."
This is the second sexual assault allegation levelled against Davids, who was a teacher at Halawat Ul Qur’an Haafith Academy in Ottery.
Laing adds: “Karriem was out on bail for another sexual assault case that was opened on 12 September 2019.
“The next appearance for that court case is 27 November.”
In the May 2007 case, Karriem was arrested after a 13-year-old victim alleged she had been molested by the madressa teacher during Ramadan.
The victim’s mom, who cannot be named, previously told the Daily Voice that her daughter claimed that she gave Karriem a peck on the cheek after he asked her why she did not greet him, but the teacher allegedly turned and kissed her “open mouth” and grabbed her bum.
“It happened during the Fast, she was attending the haafith classes and I dropped her at the school one night,” says the mother.
Chaos erupted at Karriem’s bail hearing on 16 September this year when Magistrate Goolam Bawa granted him bail of R1000.
This after members of Pagad (People Against Gangsterism and Drugs), who came to support the alleged victim, demanded he remain behind bars.
Police say the accused appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday to face the new 2007 charges of sexual assault and he was granted bail.
