Local celebrities have come together to lend a helping hand to the iconic Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital by wrapping a red bow on its fence to help raise awareness.
The event last Friday is part of the Leave Your Mark on Life Campaign to raise R150 million for the hospital by 2020.
Celebs like Jawaahier Petersen, Madeegha Anders, Zoë Brown, Gary Gold, Mujahid George, Angel Campey, Guy McDonald and the Magic 828 radio team, as well as Stormers players Salmaan Moerat and Ruhan Nel joined past patients, parents, hospital management and staff for the event, hosted by the Children’s Trust, the hospital’s fundraising arm.
Recent patient, 11-year-old Blaze Phieffer from Lotus River, shared her story for the first time.
Blaze was the recipient of a double-transplant for her kidney and liver, which took place in February this year.

The meisie has been in and out of hospital since she was four years old and after seven years, treatment was failing and she was given only six months to live.
Her father Byron Koopman says: “I stopped working to look after her and tears fill our eyes each time we think about our journey and the moments that once looked like defeat. She had a few months to live and now our daughter will be fine again.”

The ribbon will remain an iconic feature for months to come and is a reflection of the doctors, nurses and staff who are so dedicated to “wrapping their arms” around the hundreds and thousands of children who visit the hospital each year, the Children’s Trust says.
