The trial of a former Cape Flats cop, who is accused of raping a woman in the holding cells, has been postponed as his lawyers are not ready to defend him.
Enkosi Matiwane, a former constable stationed at Grassy Park Police Station, was expected to appear at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court this week, but relatives of the victim say despite being summoned to court, the matter was postponed again.
The 29-year-old woman, from Hanover Park, says she was arrested for shoplifting in Ottery on 7 January 2016 and was taken to Grassy Park Police Station.
While in custody, Matiwane allegedly handcuffed her, raped her and slapped her in the face with his penis before cleaning himself.
She appeared in court the next day and was released on R500 bail.
He was busted after a DNA sample linked him to the case after nearly two years of testing, and he was fired earlier this year.
The woman’s angry mother says: “We were all summoned to court to give testimony about the rape case and when he visited our house to intimidate us.
“Then they called us to say it is postponed again because his lawyers need more time for the trial.
“It has been three years already, she was ready to take the stand and now [there’s] another delay. We are waiting on the new date.”
