A Manenberg couple is working hard to make their dream come true of starting their own feeding scheme.
Kim and David van Wyk, who along with their friends have been feeding children in their community for more than a year, have officially registered their non-profit organisation.
Kim, 36, says a couple of years ago they were part of a group which fed elderly people in Manenberg, but in January last year they decided to branch out on their own.
“We started The Need of the Needy Foundation and our vision was to start a feeding scheme that caters for everyone who is sukkeling,” Kim says.
“So there are six of us who come together and dig into our own pockets and hand out food. We have done it in Manenberg and Athlone and next month we plan to go to Mitchells Plain.”

The six friends gather what money and donations they can to make pots of curry, hamburgers and boerewors rolls.
“We realised it was very hard to get donations if you do not have a registered organisation so we submitted our application to the Department of Social Development and are waiting for our NPO number. They told us we should get it in about a week.
“All of us are really passionate about helping people in the community and people don’t realise that some have nothing to eat.
“Once we have our number we will make formal requests for donations, but we prefer people to donate food that we will cook and hand out once a week,” Kim says.
On Saturday the group handed out soup in Jordaan Street.
