Police are investigating a case of attempted murder in Mitchells Plain after a petrol bomb was hurled at a house in Lentegeur on Wednesday evening.
It is believed the house belongs to a former female cop who is now a mert.
Residents in Tulip Street say they were woken up by a loud bang after the bomb was flung by unknown men, who fled the scene.
Police say no injuries or fatalities were reported, but the house was gutted.
A community crime fighter says the former cop is now a mert for the Junior Cisko Yakkies, and the petrol bomb was the work of rivals.
“The homeowner is a former officer and she now has drug ties, as a merchant for the Yakkies. Sy werk vir hulle.
“After a failed hand grenade and petrol bomb attack four months ago it seems that arsonists finally managed to successfully petrol bomb this place,” says the crime fighter, who did not want to be identified.
A witness who spoke to the Daily Voice says he lives in constant fear that he will come home to find family dead.
“We keep the children inside all the time. It is not just our road, but the entire area that is a cesspool for drugs and gangs. People randomly get shot these days. We are too afraid to go out of the house,” says the man, who asked not to be named.
“I heard a massive bang that shook our house and we were too afraid to go and look. I also heard a few gunshots.
“After about 15 minutes we saw others standing outside and there was smoke coming from one of the houses. Someone threw a petrol bomb and tried to kill the people there.”
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne says fire services responded at 10.32pm.
“The house was petrol-bombed and no injuries or fatalities were reported,” he says.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms: “According to reports a petrol bomb was thrown at the house and one shot was also fired. The house burnt down during the incident.
