Fools and their money can rest assured knowing the infamous “Dik Skelm” abandoned her bid for bail and wants to be in jail.
Yesterday Portia Goodwin appeared at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on charges of fraud.
The 32-year-old fraudster was expected to apply for bail yesterday after she was arrested on October 5, hours after allegedly defrauding an Engen garage staffer in Diep River, by selling staff an invalid Pick n Pay shopping voucher for R600.
The Daily Voice has reported on numerous cases of Cape business people falling for the convicted con artist, who had managed to evade for months.
A relaxed-looking Goodwin walked into court scanning the public gallery for familiar faces, only to skel when she saw she had no supporters.
State Prosecutor Ellenor Roberts said the state was ready to proceed with the bail application but understood that the accused no longer wished to go ahead with it.
Goodwin’s Legal Aid lawyer confirmed that she wished to abandon her bail application.
Prosecutors also informed the court they needed a postponement for further investigation because witness statements are outstanding as well as video footage that reportedly shows the Manenberg mom caught in the act.
But she is yet to appear at Wynberg Magistrates’ Court for a similar but separate fraud matter being investigated by Mowbray police.
Goodwin was nabbed by investigators in September after she allegedly conned an employee at a Caltex garage in Rondebosch into giving her R2 000.
But the case never went before a Magistrate after prosecutors sent the docket back to police, claiming they're not able to make out the handwriting on the statement.
The accused was released and rearrested weeks later by Diep River police.
It’s also revealed that Correctional Services is investigating Goodwin for contravening her parole on a 2014 case where she was sentenced to 18 months correctional supervision and house arrest on condition she didn’t re-offend.
Goodwin is due back at court on November 25 after Magistrate Xoliswa Ndoyana postponed her matter for further investigation.
