Chanelle's body was found dumped on the banks of the Vygieskraal River near Primrose Park on Friday. The girl had extensive facial injuries and was found in her school uniform.
The girl's uncle, Carlo De Kock and neighbour Stanton Mano were scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning for the girl's murder.
But a twist in the case saw the matter being referred to Wynberg Magistrate's Court as a rape charge had been added.
As the police van left Athlone Magistrate's Court, Manenberg moms who had gathered to picket spotted the suspects and started chasing after the police van.
Chanelle lived with her mother and grandmother in a top-storey flat while her uncle, aunt and cousins lived in a Wendy house at the back of a ground floor flat at Audrey Court.
A police source explains: “She left her house at 7.30am and went to her aunty’s house downstairs to get her two nieces to go to the place where they get porridge in the morning.
“But on Thursday the aunty had a hospital appointment and took the two children with her. So when Chanelle got there, the uncle got her.”
