Chaos erupted in the Cape Town CBD on Wednesday as hundreds of women took to the street to vent their anger at government's failure to protect women and children.
What started as a peaceful protest turned into a violent clash between police and mostly female protesters, which were made up of various advocacy groups and members of the public, outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) where the World Economic Forum on Africa was taking place.
Meanwhile local celebs and influencers have taken to social media to vent their anger against the spate of gruesome killings.
In a series of Facebook posts, comedian Siv Ngesi called for a national shutdown.
"We should all be disgusted, we should all be ashamed by the state of this country," he said in one of his posts.
Siv, who started the #SAShutdown - Real Men Don’t Rape campaign, said: “it’s time for us as men to admit that we have failed.”
Meanwhile, local muso Robin Pieters paid an emotional musical tribute with the song 'Gone too Soon', to Jesse Hess, Uyinene Mrwetyana, Leighandre Jegels, Janiko Mello, Lynette Volschenk, Meghan Cremer and all the other women who have lost their lives during this time.
Social media influencer and Ikie Botha is known for his followers laugh, but on Monday he put all jokes and in an emotional post urged women to look after themselves and parents to "keep your kids safe at home".
Nearly 300 000 people have signed a petition calling for the death penalty to be reinstated in South Africa, while pickets are also set to take place outside Parliament this week.
