The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is probing a group of cops who opened fire on women and children using a shotgun.
The shocking incident that took place in Delft on Saturday night was captured on CCTV cameras and saw the women and children injured by rubber bullets.
In the incident in Crocodile Street, a cop is also seen klapping a 17-year-old girl.
A 32-year-old mom, who asked not to be named, says they have been left traumatised by the ordeal and says the heavy-handed officers attacked them for no reason.
“We were three women and two teens chatting outside my house on Saturday
“A white bakkie pulled up and stopped by us when the cop sitting behind the driver said: ‘Hi Ladies’.”
She says they jokingly greeted the officers when another cop started klopping aan.
“He said, ‘don’t you want to take a ride with us?’ and we didn’t even take note but then one of the girls asked them why they are stopping by us and that is when they got out.”
She says the three uniformed officers then got out of the bakkie and one grabbed the 17-year-old girl by her hair and started smacking her.
“Then the other one just took out a shotgun and shot.
“We ran, I don’t even know how many shots went off.”
The video shows the vuilgat officers picking up the rounds on the ground before driving away.
The mom says she only noticed later that she had been shot in the stomach and they found rubber bullets on the ground.
“The one girl was shot in her bum and another woman on her leg. I only saw later that it went right through my top.
“We are all traumatised and can’t believe the police will just shoot at women, they are supposed to protect us,” she adds.
When the Daily Voice visited the scene on Tuesday, Ipid investigators were taking a statement from the woman.
Ipid spokesperson, Grace Langa, says: “We confirm that Ipid is investigating the above matter, we are in the process of obtaining further statements from witnesses and shall update yourselves of further progress to determined all possible charges against the members.”
Community Police Forum (CPF) spokesperson, Pastor Charles, says they are outraged by the shooting.
“From the CPF, once again we want to say we need to fight all types of crime with technology.
“If it was not for the CCTV footage, we would never know what happened,” he says.
“We are not in favour of how the cops handled themselves ...we want to encourage Ipid to do a full investigation.
“We cannot have men in uniform behaving like gangsters.”
