Pieces of a female body were found scattered on the tracks at Nyanga Junction, Manenberg on Saturday morning.
A video, which has since gone viral, shows a mutilated female torso, with her head, arms and legs missing.
It’s believed the woman was in her twenties and was wearing black clothing.
There were also deep gashes to her breasts and vaginal area.
Shocked community members gathered at the tracks as cops arrived.
Residents could be heard speculating that the woman may have been killed elsewhere and her body dumped on the tracks to make it look like she had been hit by a train.
However, provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, says no foul play was suspected and that the woman had in fact committed suicide.
“Please be advised that a death inquest case has been opened for investigation following an incident that occurred on Saturday morning at Nyanga Junction.
“According to information a woman in her twenties who is believed to be from Gugulethu committed suicide (by walking in front of the train).”
