An ambulance crew was attacked late on Saturday night in Kraaifontein.
The two paramedics from Western Cape Health were responding to a callout when they were attacked by gun-wielding robbers.
The crew were not injured and managed to get away before the skelms could take anything.
It’s understood the paramedics proceeded to the callout despite the attack.
EMS spokesperson Robert Daniels confirmed the incident.
“We had reports of an attack on a crew in Bloekombos, Kraaifontein, just before midnight on Saturday evening.
“The two staff members were gun-pointed and we assume it was just a crime of opportunity again to gain valuables like cell phones and wallets from the crew.
“As far as we know, no equipment was taken and we have yet to confirm if they managed to get away with any valuables,” Daniels said.
Speaking to the Daily Voice anonymously, an off-duty paramedic said she cannot understand why people would attack them.
She says she and her partner have been targeted “a number of times”, where they were robbed while she was injured on her right arm where a skelm had cut her.
She appealed to the community to assist paramedics by being on the lookout for potential criminals and also to report all incidents to police.
“It is a horrific experience to go out to try and save lives, then we cannot do a thing because we have to deal with injuries and robberies of ourselves,” she says.
“Two of my colleagues have quit their jobs. Stop hurting us, or we won’t be able to do our jobs.”
