Police say they’ve caught an alleged paedophile with his pants down outside a Cape Town primary school.
After the 47-year-old’s arrest, officers also confiscated electronic devices containing child pornography from his home.
The bust follows an intensive investigation by members of the Bellville Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, says police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk.
He says an investigation was launched after cops received a complaint from a Parow primary school last Wednesday, about an unknown man who had been trying to get children to get into his car, even offering them money.
“It was alleged by several witnesses that the suspect would park his vehicle near the school entrances where he would perform inappropriate sexual deeds in view of the children. This had occurred over a period of time,” says Van Wyk.
He says on Thursday and Friday, a team monitored the school’s premises, but the pervert did not appear.
“Witnesses were interviewed and their statements were obtained. Some of the learners disclosed that the suspect had offered them money to get into his vehicle, but they had declined,” said Van Wyk.
But they hit the jackpot on Monday when the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Randall Davids, and his colleague Detective Sergeant Conrad van Zyl, conducted a sting operation at the school and the suspect’s vehicle was spotted in the vicinity.
“They requested the driver to exit the vehicle and they noticed that his pants were still down,” says Van Wyk.
“They subsequently arrested him. A search warrant was obtained and executed (on Tuesday) where several electronic devices containing pornographic material involving children were seized.”
The suspect is due to appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on several charges, including possession of child porn and indecently exposing himself to children.
Police urged parents to be vigilant and teach their children to never get into the vehicle of a stranger or accept any money from strangers.
Van Wyk urged mense to report suspicious activity around schools to police immediately.
