A New Horizons man appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning after he was found with dop worth R15 000 after the smokkie he works at was raided by police on Sunday.
Grassy Park police was sworn at by angry dronkies in Peppershrike Street as they carried out more than 40 cases of beer.
Station commander, Colonel Dawood Laing, says the problematic smokkie is owned by an oupa who continues to flout the law despite being issued with several fines.
“He has applied for a (liquor) licence, but does not have one,” says Laing.
“On Sunday afternoon officers conducted a search of the property shortly after 5.15pm and again they found cases of beer and other liquor being sold.
“Officers confiscated more than 40 cases of beer and other liquor worth about R15 000.”
Laing says the owner’s friend, who works at the smokkie, told cops it was his liquor and cops arrested him.
Man, 37, claimed booze was his
“Every time a search is conducted and liquor is found the owner does not take responsibility and his friend takes the fall for him by saying it is his liquor.
“Even if you raid that place at 11am, by 1pm he is fully stocked again.
“Each time he gets arrested he is fined for selling liquor illegally, but this time the 37-year-old man will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for illegally dealing in liquor.”
Laing says angry residents hurled abuse at cops.
“He also hands out food to the community and that is why they support him, but just like a tik dealer he is breaking the law.”
In January officers confiscated liquor worth R30 000 from the same house.
