The mother of a little boy who was found murdered after he disappeared in March says she is currently enrolled at a drug rehabilitation centre to kick her habit and help her cope with her son’s death.
Self-confessed drug addict Davideen Lucas, 28, was at the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where her friend Melvyn ‘Mel’ Volkwyn, 41, appeared on a charge of kidnapping and murder for one-year-old son Orderick’s death.
“I’m seeing this through; Ordie’s death has me looking at my life and things need to change. I still miss him,” Davideen said.
Volkwyn appeared briefly via Audio Visual Remand (AVR) where the matter was once again postponed for further investigation and also for decision on whether the matter will be escalated to the Western Cape High Court for trial.

Previously the State asked for DNA and forensic evidence to be re-evaluated.
Prosecutor Nathan Adriaanse announced that the pathology report was handed to senior pathologist Professor Johan Dempers, the expert in the Courtney Pieters murder trial, for re-evaluation.
Volkwyn remains in custody after he was denied bail in June.
The matter was postponed to 25 September.
Davideen said on Sunday, 24 March, she was beaten up for allegedly stealing a cellphone.
She planned to go to the hospital the next day for treatment and asked Volkwyn to look after Ordie.
Volkwyn allegedly told Ordie’s father that the boy was with his ouma, Cornelia Scheepers.

However, when Davideen visited her mother the Thursday, she discovered her child was missing and immediately went to the police.
Four days later, Orderick’s naked body was found in a drain metres from Cornelia’s home in Witterbol Street by a group of children who were trying to retrieve a ball.
