The bail application for alleged Ottery paedophile David “Ta Pops” Dudley continued in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday with the suspect looking far healthier than at previous appearances.
Dudley is charged with seven counts of rape and two of sexual assault, with the State saying in its summary of the case that more charges might be added.
The widowed father of two daughters was arrested in January after six boys, aged nine to 12, broke their silence.
They say he would then touch their penises, perform oral sex on them and make them do the same to him.
After that, the boys penetrated him anally until they ejaculated or until he was satisfied.
He then paid them anything from R36 to R300.
Tuesday Advocate Mia for the defence read into record Dudley’s affidavit.
He said his client was not a flight risk and intends to plead “not guilty” to all the charges.
He said Dudley’s parents and three minor children aged 15, seven and one are all dependent on him as the sole breadwinner.
The defence delved into his client’s history, confirming that he had been a soccer coach, and was involved in various outreach programmes in underprivileged communities.
Mia also said Dudley’s panel beating business was suffering while he was in jail and brought a petition from residents asking for his release.
The defence asked for bail to be set at R1000.
The matter will continue today where the investigating officer is set to testify.
The State said the cop was not available on Tuesday because he had to take his sick child to the doctor.
