Alleged wife killer, Rob Packham, is set to know his fate on 16 May as the defence team concluded their closing arguments.
The Constantia businessman is accused of killing his wife, Gill, 56, in their Riesling Road home and later setting her green BMW on fire at the Diep River Police Station on 22 February 2018.
So far the former Twizza boss has contested all testimony given by State witnesses as well as
evidence in the High Court.
In his arguments, Defence Advocate Craig Webster raised concern about the conduct of the investigating officer.
Webster says he was looking at aspects like the presence of an elderly couple at their home who said they did not hear anything, and the fact that the investigator did not question the occupants of the home where Gill’s car was spotted.
“It is clear that the investigator had the accused in his sights from the beginning from the 23rd of February when hostility was already conveyed. The investigator sought to build a case around the accused.”
Webster also questioned the manner in which the ID parade was conducted, claiming Packham’s picture appeared among others of the same description - namely that of an older white male - despite a witness, Keenon Thomas, seeing a light-skinned
coloured man Diep River.
He called for Packham to be acquitted.
Judge Elizabeth Steyn adjourned proceedings until 16 May.
