The family of a young woman, whose body was found on a dumping site near a dam in Philippi yesterday, says they found out about her death on Facebook.
Nomvuzo Atoli, 22, was discovered close to where the naked body of 17-year-old Amahle Quku was found on 20 June in Albert Luthuli Street.
Nomvuzo’s mother learnt about her child’s horrific death after pictures of her body were circulated on Facebook.
Nomvuzo was found with head injuries in a shipping container in Siyanyanzela informal settlement, Browns Farm.
The young woman had been busy applying to study at UCT.
Aunt Nokwandisa Nyalela says her niece came looking for her on Wednesday afternoon.
“I heard she came to see me, but I was not at home, she usually visits me because I brought her up. This morning I heard from my son that he saw on Facebook that Nomvuzo had been killed,” Nokwandisa cries.
She says they were shocked when they heard her body was found nearby where Amahle’s body was found.
“I don’t know what happened, all I heard was that she had a wound on her head, I don’t know whether she was robbed.
“I also don’t know if she was raped because she still had her clothes on except for her sandals which we found nearby between the shacks, where we think she was killed.
“We are deeply hurt by what happened, it is hard to understand why this would happen because she was a lovely girl,” says the distraught aunt.
Resident Nonyameko Matiwane says the community is still in shock over Amahle and now they have to bury yet another young woman, and all this during Women’s Month.
“Nobody knows what happened to her, the only people that can help are the friends she was last seen with on Wednesday night,” she says.
“As women, we need to stand up and do something because this has to stop. How are our children supposed to grow up if they have to live in fear?”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms a case of murder has been opened for investigation by Nyanga SAPS with no arrests yet.
She says: “According to reports, police were alerted to the discovery of the deceased by the community, upon their arrival they found her at a dumping site with head injuries.”
Leonardo Mzingeli, 25, was arrested for Amahle’s murder and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on 6 October again.
He remains in custody at Pollsmoor Prison.
