Two suspected gangsters are facing charges of attempted murder after they opened fire on Metro cops.
The drama unfolded on Monday along Manenberg Avenue in Manenberg when members of the Metro Police’s Gang and Drug Task Team were carrying out patrols and heard gunshots.
Metro Police Superintendent Nosiseko Ntshanka says when the team arrived at the scene, they found two rival gangs engaged in a shootout.
“Metro Police Gang and Drug Task Team members were doing stop and search operations in Manenberg (Monday), when they heard shots fired close by and responded.
“Officers came across a shootout between rival gang members, some of whom then turned on the officers and opened fire.
“One of the officers returned fire and the groups ran away.
“Officers then found two men who had been wounded, one in the left shoulder and lower left leg and the other in the left leg.
“Both suspects received medical treatment and are currently in police custody on charges of attempted murder.
“Officers also found an imitation firearm on scene.”
She says it’s not clear who shot the duo - the officers or rival gangsters - and that this would form part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, also on Monday, cops attended to another scene in Athon Walk, Hanover Park where a 37-year-old man, known as Porky Mongrel, was killed.
Police spokesperson, Captain Lance Goliath, confirmed: “The deceased sustained several gunshot wounds to his body. He died at the scene. It is yet to be determined if the incident was gang-related.”
