The Mitchells Plain Animal Welfare is considering opening a case of abuse after a dog was found barely alive with a chain embedded in his flesh.
Vanessa Martin, the founder of Mitchells Plain Animal Welfare, says they received a tip-off earlier this week about the dog.
Vanessa says they followed up on the information and were horrified to find the dog in a woman’s backyard in Tafelsig, with the rusted chain still around his neck.
She explains when the dog was taken to theatre, they discovered that infection had already set in and that the chain had “become part of the dog’s flesh” and had to be surgically removed.
Vanessa says the woman claimed the animal had followed her home while she walked down AZ Berman Drive in Mitchells Plain and that she decided to take him home.
“She claims that the chain had been around his neck when she took him in after he had followed her along AZ Berman Drive but that it was not that bad at that stage,” Vanessa says.
“Chains are meant for bikes and not dogs. A member from the community gave us a tip-off and we could rescue the dog, which is a cross between a Pit Bull and a Labrador.
“The owners also claimed that they had attempted to remove the chain from the animal’s neck.”
Vanessa says they are now considering opening a case of abuse.
“This is a pending case of abuse as we need to establish who the real owner is and what happened to this dog,” she adds.
