The trial of murder accused Shakoor Roberts will continue in January 2020 after the State finally managed to read all the court records
pertaining to his alleged confession.
Roberts made a brief appearance at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where he is facing a charge of
murder for his mother, Gafsa Roberts, 61.
State prosecutor, Darren Johnson, informed the court that he had completed reading court records, which include all witnesses statements and testimonials.
He said he now needed time to consult with State witnesses to clarify a few matters.
Magistrate Mary Jacuw then wanted to know when the trial could positively continue without further hassles, and Johnson said on 21 January 2020.
This date marks nearly five years since Gafsa’s body was found in her wheelie bin.
The mom was choked to death.
HOF: Shakoor Roberts
The trial was placed on hold after evidence was led by State witness Jamia Daniels earlier this year, where she testified that she had made a recording of Roberts apparently admitting that he killed his mother.
Prosecutors are set to prove Roberts, 27, strangled his mother to death on 27 February 2015, that he washed her body and hid it inside their dirtbin.
On 2 March 2015, a neighbour found Gafsa’s body inside the bin at their home in Winterhoek Street, Tafelsig.
Roberts has denied the allegations, claiming his mother had gone away on holiday with friends and that he did not kill her.
Roberts had been living alone with his mother, who according to witnesses, feared her son.
