Police say a 61-year-old woman and her daughter who are suspected traffickers were caught red-handed with R9.4 million worth of drugs, two elephant tusks and a money counter.
Grace Kunjan and her daughter Hlumile Kunjan, 27, made their first appearance at the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Monday where they faced drug-related charges.
The matter was postponed to 10 December for their formal bail application.
During an operation last week, members of the Hawks, the Cape Town Narcotics Enforcement Bureau and the Provincial Crime Intelligence team arrested the women at a storage facility in Somerset West.
Drugs like tik and mandrax worth R8.9m were found inside the suspects’ car and inside the facility.
Cops also discovered two elephant tusks in the car and a note counter.
Hawks spokesman Captain Philani Nkwalashe says: “Two separate cases of dealing in drugs have been opened in Somerset West and Lansdowne respectively.”
Two weeks ago, the Hawks nabbed Mogamat Rafiek Hayners, 24, at another storage facility in Somerset West after he was allegedly found in possession of drugs, including tik, heroin and mandrax worth R8.9m.
Haynes is currently out on bail in relation to a case in which a child and a woman were knocked over by a vehicle and killed.
