An Ottery man who tried to smokkel cheap entjies from Polokwane into Cape Town is in the mang after undercover cops raided his home on Tuesday night.
According to a source the 33-year-old man used a private courier company to smuggle the cheap cigarettes worth more than R100 000 and was caught as clever cops followed his package from Polokwane to Ottery.
“He is not a gangster, but apparently he used a courier company to bring the entjies to Cape Town,” says the source.
“It was delivered at the neighbour who lives in front and then given to him.
“When the cops raided the house they caught him opening up his packages and there all the entjies came out.
“It was a lot of cigarettes, but this fong kong stuff. The one packet was called ‘Weed’.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut says officers from the K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence, Hawks and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) followed up on information of cigarettes being smuggled from Polokwane to the Western Cape with a final destination in Grassy Park.
“Investigations resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old male and the seizure of illicit cigarettes valued at R122 000 destined for the black market.
“Once charged, the suspect is scheduled to make a court appearance in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to the Customs Act, Tobacco Products Control Act and the Disaster Management Act,” says Traut.
