Cops have arrested a woman suspected of killing a mom and daughter over an insurance policy.
The suspect Aviwe Ntloko, 32, has been charged with murder and fraud.
It is alleged that she is a stranger to Linda, 33, and her mom Thabile Nobathana, 48, and opened the policies without their knowledge, four days before they were killed.
On the afternoon of 13 July, the victims were at their Makhaza, Khayelitsha home when they were attacked.
Community member Sindiswa Tshaka says two gunmen went to their shack and opened fire.
“They asked for Linda and when she came out, she was shot and then her mom was shot,” Sindiswa says.
“They were killed in front of the children.”
The woman, who is a family friend, tells the Daily Voice the mom and daughter are only being laid to rest today.
“Their relatives have been struggling to get their funds together for a proper burial.
“After knocking on many doors, they have managed to raise funds.”
Sindiswa says the family was shocked when they learnt that there were two life insurance policies opened for Linda.
“Everyone was shocked, they were not working and when the police came and informed the family about the woman who was arrested for the murders, they became scared to even be in that shack.
“They fear for their lives and no one really stays in the house.”
A police source told Daily Voice Ntloko had opened two policies for Linda.
“Each would have paid out R50 000 (upon Linda’s death) and because this is all accidental, she would have received R200 000.
“She had been under investigation on a similar incident and now she was even more suspicious when she went to claim for this. The family didn’t even know her.
“The woman only needed the birth date of the deceased to get insurance.
“But I’m afraid I can not tell you the name of the banks she opened the policies with.”
SAPS’ FC van Wyk says: “This office can confirm that a female suspect was arrested on 23 July for the double murder and charges of fraud was also added.
“According to reports, a claim form on a life policy was taken out four days before the murders.
“The person that claimed for the policy was also not known to the family and that was suspicious.
“After an investigation, the suspect was arrested and detained.
“The suspect remains in custody and more arrests can follow.”
Van Wyk adds that the case was in court on Tuesday and remanded for 20 September.
He says the suspect used to work for a company dealing with funeral claims and policies.
