Bishop Lavis cops have nabbed a suspect for the murder of well-known crimefighter Gregory “Kallie” Carelse.
Carelse, 56, a police reservist and employee of the Department of Community Safety for more than 30 years, was shot and killed on 20 October.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirms his alleged killer was arrested.
“A 21-year-old suspect was arrested in Valhalla Park on Thursday afternoon at 5pm,” Van Wyk says.
“Police received information from the community and he was caught. He is due to appear in court once charged.”
Carelse left behind a wife and six children.
It is believed a local gang had put a price of R250 000 on his head, and it was not the first time, his wife Rezone previously told the Daily Voice.
‘CAUSE OF TERROR’: The suspected shooter, 21
Carelse was shot on the corner of Barracuda Street and Kasteelberg Road in Lavis where he had been standing with an 18-year-old man.
According to witnesses, two shooters had come through the 8ste Laan informal settlement from Robert Sobukwe Road and shot the two men execution-style.
They took Carelse’s firearm and fled on foot back through the hokkies before jumping into a bakkie and speeding off.
Carelse died on the scene.
The arrest comes after a photograph of the suspect was released on social media.
A resident, who asked not to be named, says: “He is a terror to this community. He just came out of jail and started shooting up the area.”
According to a source, the shooter recently came out of prison and is apparently responsible for a spate of gang-related shootings in Valhalla Park, Bonteheuwel, Bishop Lavis and Netreg over the past two months.
