Justice has been delayed yet again for little Shaylynn Arendse and her nanny Maureen Abrahams.
On Monday the new legal team of their self-confessed killer Moegamat Rafiek Hayners told the Wynberg Regional Court they need time to review transcripts of his case before he can be sentenced.
Two weeks ago when he was due to be sentenced, Hayners threw a spanner in the works when he told the court he could no longer afford his attorney, Advocate Adrian Samuels.
He was expected to be sentenced but instead appointed a new lawyer, Leon van der Merwe.
NEW DEFENCE: Hit and run killer Rafiek Hayners
On Monday, the Magistrate was irked to find that typed transcripts of the trial were not ready for the defence, and said load shedding could not be blamed.
He ordered that the records be made ready for Hayners’ legal team, adding that Hayners had already pleaded guilty and sentencing proceedings had already commenced.
The matter was postponed to April 1.
In February, Magistrate Khaleed Parker Court transferred the matter to the Regional Court in order for Hayners to get a heftier sentence.
He said Hayners had driven like the devil was chasing after him and three years for a count of culpable homicide would be too little.
At the Regional Court, Hayners could face anything between 15 and 20 years behind bars for culpable homicide.
Shaylynn, 6, and Maureen, 61, were killed in September 2018 when Hayners jumped a red robot and slammed into them at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Strandfontein Road.
VICTIM: Maureen Abrahams
He fled the scene but later handed himself over to cops after his car was found at a relative’s home in Hanover Park.
While out on bail, Hayners was bust by the Hawks at a storage facility in Somerset West with drugs worth R8.9 million.
