David Van Boven, the man accused of murdering UWC student Jesse Hess and allegedly raping a 16-year-old Hanover Park girl, has abandoned his bail application.
Van Boven appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of rape, robbery aggravated and attempted murder.
Police say Van Boven is a “person of interest” in the murder investigation of Jesse and her oupa, Chris Lategan, 85.

Van Boven was arrested in Struisbaai on Wednesday after he went on the run following the alleged rape of the Hanover Park teen in her home.
On Friday he entered the dock wearing a grey hooded jacket, covering his face before removing the cap.
Advocate Emily Van Wyk, the Senior Prosecutor for the State told the court Van Boven was facing charges of rape, robbery aggravated and attempted murder.
She revealed that Van Boven was convicted of rape and drug-related cases and was out on parole when he allegedly raped the Hanover Park teen.
Van Wyk asked that the matter be postponed to February 14 2020 for further investigation as evidence such as DNA was still outstanding.
Van Boven's legal aid lawyer then added his client would abandon his bail stating there was a possibility that additional charges could be added.
On November 20, Van Boven is expected to appear at Bellville Magistrate’s Court where he will face charges relating to Jesse and her oupa's murder.
Jesse's oupa, Chris Lategan.
Jesse and Chris were found murdered at their home in Parow in August.
Hanover Park residents alleged Van Boven has made Hanover Park his home after being "let go" by cops after the double murder due to a lack of evidence.
