Five men accused of murdering a loving Strandfontein dad will know their fate on Thursday.
The five pleaded not guilty to all their charges, but the State on Tuesday provided video footage placing them at two crime scenes.
They had shot and killed dad of two Grant Fredericks, 39, in Strandfontein, and took his car, which was later used in a jewellery store robbery in Claremont.
Zingisile Kleinhans, Siphokule Bulana, Xola Nakumba, Themba Jijaji and Mongameli Dyani were in the Cape High Court where closing arguments were heard on Tuesday.
On 20 September 2016, Grant was at a tuckshop in Milano Street, San Remo, to buy a cooldrink.
He was shot in the back and the suspects fled in his red VW Polo.
The next day, they tried to rob the Robb Trigg jewellery store in Claremont, where they were nabbed by wakker security guards and cops.
Grant’s car and an unlicensed firearm, gloves, a fake firearm and a screwdriver were seized.
The suspects face 12 charges ranging from murder to attempted robbery and the possession of an illegal firearm.
CAPTURED: Robbery caught on store CCTV
State prosecutor, Alfred Isaacs, provided damning CCTV footage from the tuckshop and jewellery store, which place the suspects at both scenes.
In addition, the State provided witnesses who saw the suspects at both scenes.
“Accused 3, Nakumba, was being chased by police and threw away a revolver, a .38, and the bullet removed from the deceased’s body was a .38 or .357.
“The video places the accused and there is no need for experts. The video takes on the State’s independent silent witness,” said Isaacs.
Lawyers for the accused argued that the footage was too dark and there was no DNA evidence.
They also claimed their clients had alibis and that the State’s main witness was not at the scene and only gave cops a statement later.
Judgment will be delivered on Thursday.
