A grandfather has been arrested after his 14-year-old grandson was shot.
The teenager is said to have broken one of the 75-year-old’s flowers.
As a result, Umar Parkar is now fighting for his life in Tygerberg Hospital.
The incident happened in Prinsloo Street, Parow, around 6pm on Thursday.
The boy’s father Walid was celebrating his birthday on the day.
He says he watched helplessly as the bullet ripped his child’s collarbone.
“I tried to tell him it was just a flower, but he was angry,” he says.
“My daughter took a phone to record my father’s angry reaction and my father saw that.
“He hit her and I noticed that he was carrying his gun.
“I tried shouting but he already pulled the trigger.”
Walid says he fought for the gun and managed to disarm his father-in-law.
His wife Fairuz went out to get help.
Fairuz says she does not understand how her father could shoot her child.
“I want to ask him why he did it, I will ask him when he appears in court,” she says.
“The bullet broke his collarbone and spiralled down and scraped the liver.
“The doctors say he suffered internal bleeding and they cannot operate on him to remove the bullet until the bleeding stops.”
She says her father has always had issues with Umar.
“He liked picking on him, he always accused him of destroying his flowers and would have a go at him.
“I am concerned about my son, I pray he makes it alive,” cried the mother.
The house in Parow is surrounded by trees and flowers, which were planted by the grandfather.
The man’s wife Ragiema Toefy, 69, admitted he has anger issues.
“He is an angry man and a violent man. I have been married to him for many years, I know him,” he says.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms: “A case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation after a 14-year-old was shot and wounded at Prinsloo Street on Thursday.
“A man was arrested and will appear in court for the attempted murder.”
