Cops have arrested a suspect for the shooting of alleged Americans gang leader Mohammad Gummie Solomons outside a Wynberg mosque on Friday.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi confirms a 32-year-old man was arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder.
“In the early hours of this morning, Anti-Gang Unit detectives conducted a tracing operation which led them to an address in Heideveld where the suspect was arrested,” he says.
It is believed the attack was part of a turf war currently being waged by the Fancy Boys gang in Heideveld looking to expand their reach.
One man died and two were injured in a silver VW Golf outside the Park Road mosque at the corner of Mars and Batts Roads.
Gummie, from Heideveld, was hit in the bum while his nephew Adenaan Cloete, 29, died while he was sitting in the driver’s seat and a passenger, Reza Clayton, 41, was also wounded.
Cops found 21 bullet casings at the scene while an eyewitness claimed that Gummie was the target.
“I know all about Gummie because he regularly comes to the mosque and basically organises things for the Americans,” the source said.
“The other two are also high-ranking guys but I think Gummie was the target because most of the shots were in his direction and it looks like the other two guys were shot first so that they could not protect him.”
A source says the suspect is a high-ranking Fancy Boys member: “He is currently on parole, he came out of prison a year and a half ago, it is believed that he is taking out Americans for turf.”
Swartbooi adds that the suspect is due to make an appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today.
