The case against former Springbok James Dalton who was arrested in Sea Point last week has been postponed until April.
Dalton, who was part of the 1995 Rugby World Cup winning team, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday on charges of intimidation, assault and resisting arrest.
The 44-year-old former rugby player was arrested on Thursday following an altercation with the police in Sea Point.
He claims a cop had accused him of a hit and run, which he denied and a “heated argument” ensued, resulting in his arrest.
Dalton was only released from police holding cells Saturday afternoon on R1500 bail.
According to reports, Dalton said he was at Jerry’s Burger Bar in Sea Point on Thursday night and was speaking to the owner outside the restaurant when an unmarked car and a police van pulled up alongside him.
Bumping
The cop apparently told him that the man in the other vehicle had accused him of bumping into his car and driving off.
Dalton, who was in a new BMW 420, denied this and told the cop to inspect his car.
The other man then apparently conceded his car had not been damaged and drove off.
It was then that Dalton and the cop started arguing and things “got out of control”.
At the station, cops allegedly denied him the opportunity to make a phone call and forced him to “beg”.
The case was postponed to April 3 for further investigations to take place.
