The Cape of Good Hope SPCA will be conducting a post-mortem on a female dog after it was allegedly beaten to death by a resident just a week after she gave birth to two puppies.
Spotty lived in Newfields with her elderly owners, aged 79 and 76.
Their tenant, Christo Anthony, 35, says he woke to the sounds of an animal in pain just after midnight on Saturday.
“We were sleeping and then I heard this guy opening his door and he went to the side of the house. I got up and heard the dog growling,” says Christo.
“Spotty picked up her puppies and hid them under the wooden board. This guy then decided to jump on the plank and then the dog started screaming like someone was murdering it.”
The 79-year-old owner, who asked not to be identified, says he found Spotty’s remains in their backyard the next morning.
“The morning when I went to have a look, I saw the dog lying there,” he says.
GRUESOME END: Spotty was found dead at home
“The SPCA came and removed the dog and now we have to look after the two puppies who were still drinking on her. They are only one week old.”
His wife says Spotty was a friendly dog who protected their property.
Belinda Abraham, of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, says they will be investigating claims that Spotty was deliberately killed.
“This complaint was received this morning (Monday) via our general information email address. An inspector has been dispatched and an investigation is underway.
“The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, will leave no stone unturned and will not hesitate to lead the prosecution charge if the allegations are true.”
