A 25-year-old convicted killer who was out on parole has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after he tried to beat a dog to death with golf club.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA was called to a residence in Kleinvlei on Monday where they found the suspect and the wounded dog named Snoopy after being alerted by the owner.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said: “This office can confirm the arrest of a 25-year-old man on charges of cruelty to animals and Covid-19 Violation of the Disaster Management ACT.
“He is due to appear in Blue Downs Magistrates' Court (today).”
SPCA spokeswoman Belinda Abraham says the dog survived the brutal attack.
“While most of the world unites in compassion and kindness, it seems as if those who thrive on violence carry on regardless.
“[The] attacker, already a convicted of murder, was found to be in violation of his parole conditions.
“He has been detained by the Kleinvlei SAPS and will remain in custody until his case is heard by the courts.

“Inspector Jeffery Mfini and Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse responded to the call for help at and we couldn’t be more grateful that our services are regarded as essential at this time.
“Not only could we be there for Snoopy who is now receiving the best possible veterinary treatment, but we could help make the streets a little safer by ensuring that a violent offender gets what he deserves.”
It is unclear how the man knows the homeowner or why he had been inside the house.
