A Hanover Park oupa is laughing all the way to the bank after Old Mutual has agreed to pay him back the money one of their employees had conned him out of.
After almost a year, the 75-year-old will be getting R60 000 back after falling prey to a Surrey Estate woman he says took advantage of him.
Family of the sickly man reported the employee, Nadeema Galant, to Athlone police and Old Mutual after they discovered that he had invested R100 000 which he got from the sale of his home with her.
The family says the skelme vrou took advantage of the illiterate oupa and made him sign papers, telling him she would help grow his money by investing it with Old Mutual.
He paid the money into her personal bank account, but became suspicious when she could not produce his “Old Mutual papers”.
She later paid him R50 000 back, but he opened a fraud case against her.
Nadeema Galant has been suspended from her job pending the outcome of the investigation. Picture supplied
On Wednesday the elderly man and his son went to Old Mutual where they were informed he would be reimbursed.
“They told us that they would investigate the matter and asked him to sign papers for the R50 000 and they are giving him the R10 000 that she promised.
“He will get it in about seven days, so he is very happy,” says his son.
Old Mutual spokesperson, Jaco van der Merwe, says Galant has been suspended.
“Our investigation showed that our financial adviser, Ms. Galant, was not authorised to act in the manner that she did, which is contrary to Old Mutual policy, as well as her employment contract.
“Subsequently, we signed a confidential settlement agreement with the customer.
“Ms. Galant has been suspended pending the outcome of our internal disciplinary process.”
