The cousin of murder accused Shakoor Roberts on Wednesday testified how she made an audio recording of him admitting to killing his mother, and that he showed another cousin the dead woman’s body.
Roberts is charged with the murder of his mother, Gafsa Roberts, 61.
Gafsa was throttled to death and her body discovered in her wheelie bin at her home in Tafelsig in March 2015.
Jamia Daniels, who was being cross-examined by Roberts’ lawyer, Ms L Boer, at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court, said Roberts had confessed to her and another cousin in August 2017 while they visited him.
Her statement came as a shock, especially after state prosecutor Darren Johnson this week said the recording would add no value to the case as it only mentioned American singer Nicki Minaj.
VICTIM: Gafsa Roberts, 61
It was previously heard that Roberts had told relatives his mom went away for the weekend with Minaj.
When Boer put it to Jamia that she could not say how Gafsa died, the witness replied: “I can tell you that Shakoor told me he did kill his mother.”
She said on 8 August 2017, Roberts asked her and their cousin to record him.
“I have two recordings, Ms Boer, (one on which he says) that he killed his mother and then he says he showed his cousin the body.”
Giving Johnson a vuil kyk, an incredulous Magistrate Mary Jacuw asked: “So you are able to hear the accused on that recording
asking you to record him?”
Boer then claimed Jamia and Roberts’ sister, Rushana Adams, were trying to frame him.
But Jamia said Gafsa had feared her son because he had threatened her.
The mom had obtained an interdict against him and also slept with a knife under her pillow and locked her bedroom door at night.
The trial resumes on Tuesday.
